Fasting in Islam
The Companions and the righteous predecessors in Ramadan

Early Muslims realized the value of Ramadan and so they considered it a chance to do as much good as they can. Below we will give some examples as to how they spent Ramadan.

1- Reading the Holy Quran
Alwalid Ibn Abd Elmalik would read all the holy Quran once every three days. He finished reading the holy Quran seventeen times during Ramadan.

AlRabei Ibn Sliman narrated that AlEmam AlShafei would read all the holy Quran sixty times in Ramadan while in other months he would finish reading the holy Quran thirty times within the month.

Mohamed Ibn Ismail AlBukhari would finish reading the holy Quran every morning besides he would finish reading the holy Quran after night prayer once every three days.

2- Night prayer
Imam AlHasan AlBasri said: “I did not find any worship more powerful than salaah in the middle of the night".

Abu Uthmaan AlHindi said: “I was the guest of Abu Huraira for seven [days]. He, his wife, and his servant would divide the night into three parts, praying one part and staying awake for another part".

When Shaddad ibn Aws would go to bed, he would be like a grain in a frying pan. Then he would say: “Oh Allah, hell-fire does not stop me from sleeping". Then he would stand to pray.

Taawus would strongly awaken his family, then he would make wudhu and face the qibla until morning. He would say “The sleep of the worshippers has caused them to completely stop remembering the hell-fire!"

Zum’a al-Aabid would pray long hours of the night. When dawn would approach, he would raise his voice and announce: “Oh riders of the beds, are you going to sleep and waste away the entire night? Will you not get up and leave the bed!" He would then hear crying from one place, a person making dua from another place, and someone making wudu from another place. When fajr time would come, he would say: “At the morning time, the people are thankful for the announcement"

The righteous predecessors were seven levels as regards night prayer these levels are:

  1. Praying all the night.
  2. Praying half the night.
  3. Praying third the night. That was based on the noble Prophet’s saying that the prayer most loved by Allah was that of David who would sleep half the night, pray a third then sleep sixth the night.
  4. Praying sixth or fifth the night
  5. Some of them would pray as long as he can, when overcome by sleepiness he would sleep and then when he awaked he would pray again
  6. They would pray two or four rakahs
  7. These would stay awake between the two Isha times [the early time for Isha and the later, recommended time], and they would sweeten their mornings [with dua]. This way, they would join the night and morning. The Prophet SAWS said: " Indeed in every night is a time wherein if the worshipper asks Allah for something good, He will give it. And this is in every night." [Narrated by Muslim]

3- Their Generosity in Ramadan
Ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, would fast and would not break his fast except with the poor. If his family would stop them, he would not dine that night and if a poor man would come while he was eating he would give him his food.

4- Less talking…no lying
The noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When anyone of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone insults him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: ‘I am fasting."

Abu Huraira narrated that the noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 31, Number 127)

Omar Ibn Alkhatab said:" Fasting is not from food and drink but from lying, deceitful, worthless talking and swearing"

Ali Ibn Abi Talib said:" Fasting is not from food and drink but from lying, deceitful and worthless talking"

Gaber Ibn Abd Allah said: “When you fast let your hearing, sight and tongue refrain from lying and bad words and do not hurt your servant and behave with dignity and calmness in the day of your fast. Don’t let the day of your fast be like other days"
